Is Modern Warfare 4 worth $69.99?
CoD is one of the rare games where the pre-order question is genuinely different from the "wait for sale" question. Here's the math for MW4 specifically, and who should buy day one vs. wait for a patch.
What the pre-order actually gets you
The pre-order bonus is structured differently from NBA 2K27's. You don't get in-game currency — you get three things:
- Hunter Killer Operator Skin for immediate use in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone. Cross-promo: the skin is usable in the games you might already be playing, not in MW4 itself.
- Gilded Pearl Camo Pack — Moonlit Pearl camo available at pre-order, Gilded Ruin camo unlockable later. Also a cross-promo usable in Black Ops 7 and Warzone.
- Campaign Early Access — start the MW4 campaign October 16, six days before the global launch. Multiplayer unlocks day one for everyone.
The pre-order bonus is, in other words, mostly in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, not MW4. The one MW4-specific thing is the six-day campaign head start.
Who the pre-order is actually for
- You play the campaign every year at launch. The six-day early access is the only MW4-internal perk, and if you care about that, pre-order.
- You play Warzone or Black Ops 7 daily. The Hunter Killer skin and Gilded Pearl camo are usable in those games right now, and the pre-order makes them permanent unlocks.
- You're a day-one multiplayer player. CoD MP playlists at launch need patching, but the players who grind the first week rank up faster. If you care about that, pre-order.
Who should wait
- You only play the campaign once. A six-day head start for a 6-8 hour campaign is a luxury. Buy it a week later when reviews are out and the first patch has smoothed MP.
- You don't play Black Ops 7 or Warzone. Two of the three pre-order bonuses are unusable for you, and the early access window is a campaign-only perk. Wait.
- You're sensitive to launch-day bugs. CoD MP launches are rocky. The first playlist patch usually lands 1-2 weeks post-launch. If you don't want the headache, the second-week purchase is the right one.
What the open beta told us
The Aug 28 - Sep 1, 2026 open beta was free and unrestricted. The Beta Trailer on the Steam page is the public-facing summary; full impressions are across r/ModernWarfare4, r/Games, and YouTube. Beta usually surfaces the things that get patched before launch (movement bugs, exploit chains) and the things that don't (gun balance, map pacing). If you played the beta and the game felt right, pre-order. If you didn't and the beta footage looks off to you, wait for the launch review wave.
Standard Edition vs. Vault Edition
The Standard Edition is $69.99 and gets you everything above (early access, skin, camo, full game on Oct 22). The Vault Edition — pricing on the Activision store, not Steam — bundles additional cosmetic packs, a battle pass tier skip, and additional operator slots. The math on the Vault Edition only works if you play the entire 12-month CoD season cycle. For anyone playing just MW4 at launch, Standard is the right call.
Verdict
Pre-order if the six-day campaign early access matters to you, or you main Warzone / Black Ops 7 and the cross-promo skin is worth $70 to you.
Wait if you're a single-purchase CoD player who doesn't touch the live service games. The pre-order bonus is live-service-shaped, not MW4-shaped. Buy it a week after launch when reviews are out and the first playlist patch has landed.
The $69.99 price isn't negotiable either way — there's no launch discount, no pre-order discount, no Game Pass. You're paying full price for the privilege of playing on the first day. The question is just whether "first day" is worth it to you.
