KOTAMON tips — how the trash-and-card loop works

KOTAMON is a simple game on purpose, but there's still a little rhythm to pick up. Here's what you're actually doing moment to moment, the order things flow in, and a few things that make the card hunt less scattered.

Read the room: it's supposed to be slow

Before any tips, get the mindset right. KOTAMON explicitly tells you nobody rushes you, nobody watches over your shoulder, and nobody criticizes you. That's not filler — it's the design. Don't come in expecting efficiency pressure or combos. Come in expecting a relaxed rummage, and the tips below are about pacing, not min-maxing.

The core loop, in order

• Rummage the pile. You work through trash — sorting junk from anything worth keeping. Items surface as you clear a pile.
• Spot the cards. Rare Kotámon cards hide in the trash. They're the whole point: each find fills a slot in the collection.
• Fill the orders. The dump-site owner gives you orders. Fulfilling them gives the digging a goal beyond just "find cards" and opens up the next pile of work.
• Tick off the collection. Every Kotámon you find gets logged toward the full set. That completion bar is the long-term drive.

Beginner tips that actually help

• Clear piles fully, don't cherry-pick. Rare cards aren't always the obvious shiny object — the payout of fully working a pile can be a hidden find you'd miss if you skim the surface.
• Keep an eye on the orders. If you need specific items for the dump-site owner, knowing what you're after makes the rummage faster instead of wandering.
• Treat the collection as the goal. The million-dollar framing is the hook, but the satisfying part is watching the missing card count drop. Use the collection screen as your "am I done here" reference.
• Play it as a wind-down, not a grind. It clicks best in short, relaxed sessions. When it stops feeling calm, that's the game telling you to take a break — there's no timer punishing you.
