Black Myth: Zhong Kui

Game Science's next game after Wukong. Still no release date and no Steam page yet — but on August 20, 2026 the studio dropped a full 15 minutes of real gameplay. Here's what it shows, where the game is headed, and what people who watched it are saying.

Where to follow it: there is no store page to wishlist yet — the game isn't listed on Steam as of August 24, 2026. The official Game Science site and the trailers below are the only real sources.

What is Black Myth: Zhong Kui?

The second entry in the Black Myth series from Game Science, the studio behind Black Myth: Wukong. This one is built around Zhong Kui, the ghost-catching god of Chinese folklore who, in Geoff Keighley's words at the reveal, "wanders between Hell and Earth". The central theme is life and death, which tracks with everything shown so far — the gameplay footage spends a lot of time in infernal, underworld-flavored spaces.

It's single-player, it's an action RPG, and development only started in June 2025. That last part matters: this was revealed very early by AAA standards, right after Wukong shipped. Game Science won "Surprise of the Year" at the Ultra Game Awards 2025 for announcing it this way.

What the 15-minute gameplay trailer shows

One detail fans keep arguing about: the figure in the original teaser (giant red eyebrows, riding a huge tiger) doesn't look like whoever you play as in the gameplay footage. Whether you're hunting Zhong Kui or playing as him is still officially unclear.

Release date and platforms

No date, no window. Game Science has said PC and consoles — PS5 is confirmed via the official PlayStation channel hosting the gameplay reveal — and that's the whole list so far. Given development started June 2025, a 2027 release would be a fast turnaround; treat any specific date you see online as speculation until Game Science puts a number on it.

The studio has a habit worth knowing: it reports progress on August 20 every year (that's when both the reveal and this gameplay drop landed). If you want news, mid-to-late August is when it comes.

Worth following if

  • You played Wukong and want to see where the studio takes the formula next
  • You're into Chinese mythology settings — Zhong Kui folklore is genuinely different material than Journey to the West
  • You like watching a game take shape from an early stage; there's already a dedicated subreddit dissecting every frame

Skip the hype videos with dates in the title. Nothing is dated. The two official trailers below are all the real footage that exists.
