MGS4 PC system requirements
Short answer: yes, it'll almost certainly run on your machine. MGS4 is a 2008 PS3 game, and the Master Collection Version uses the same UE-era engine. The official Steam spec is the formal minimum; the actual hardware most people need is significantly lower.
Steam's official spec (as listed)
KONAMI's posted minimum and recommended specs are conservative — they reflect a 4K/60 target, not what MGS4 actually needs to run. The "minimum" tier will run it; the "recommended" tier runs it at high settings with headroom. Anything built in the last 8-10 years should be fine.
Minimum (per Steam page)
- OS: Windows 10 (64-bit)
- CPU: Intel Core i5-4670 / AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or equivalent
- RAM: 8 GB
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (2GB) / AMD Radeon RX 460 (2GB) or equivalent
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 30 GB available
Recommended (per Steam page)
- OS: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
- CPU: Intel Core i5-7600 / AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or equivalent
- RAM: 16 GB
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super (6GB) / AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT (4GB) or equivalent
- DirectX: Version 11
- Storage: 30 GB SSD
What that actually means
The recommended spec is a 2017-era mid-range PC. A GTX 1660 Super was $230 at launch and is now available used for under $80. Anything that ran Cyberpunk 2077 at medium settings will crush MGS4 — this is a 2008 game running on a 2008-era engine. The framerate ceiling is the only real limitation: if you have a 144Hz monitor and want to push past 60fps, you might see some engine-side caps, but for 60fps at 1440p/4K, modern GPUs are overkill.
What's actually worth paying attention to:
- Storage type matters more than capacity. 30 GB on an SSD loads chapters in seconds. On a spinning HDD, expect 30-60 second load times between cutscenes and missions.
- RAM is rarely the bottleneck. 8 GB is the minimum; 16 GB gives you headroom for browser tabs running in the background. MGS4 itself uses well under 4 GB.
- The CPU matters most for cutscene playback. MGS4's codec calls and rendering during long cinematic sequences lean on single-thread CPU performance. Older dual-core CPUs without turbo boost will drop frames during busy cutscenes.
Laptop / Steam Deck notes
Steam Deck Verified status wasn't confirmed at launch. Given the 2008-era engine and modest Steam page minimums, the Deck's Zen 2 CPU + RDNA 2 GPU will handle MGS4 at 40-60fps once any launch-day verification is applied. For laptops with integrated graphics (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Vega 8), you'll be fine at 1080p/30fps on low-medium settings — this isn't a demanding title by 2026 standards.
Bottom line
If your PC can run Windows 10 and was built any time after 2015, you can run MGS4. The Steam minimum spec is a GTX 960 — anything from an RX 580 onward is more than enough. The biggest performance factor is whether you put it on an SSD. That's it.
