Metal Gear Solid 4 finally lands on PC — 19 years late
Snake's final mission is on Steam as of August 27, 2026. $29.99 standalone, no launch discount, and sold separately from the Master Collection Vol. 2 bundle. Here's what's changed in the port, what hasn't, and what to expect on PC.
What you get with MGS4 on PC
It's the 2008 PS3 exclusive, finally unchained. KONAMI brought it to Steam as part of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 rollout — but unlike MGS2 HD and MGS3 HD, which are bundled together, MGS4 is sold as its own standalone purchase on Steam for $29.99.
The Master Collection version isn't a remake. It's a modernized port: native PC support, modern controller compatibility, achievement support, and a reworked Metal Gear Online mode with cross-region play. The single-player campaign, the cutscenes, the codec calls — all of it is the same cinematic, talky, 8-hour stealth action experience from 2008.
For most players, that's the point. MGS4 is famous less as a game and more as a story that had no other home. Now it does.
What changed in the Master Collection Version
- Native PC port. No PS3 emulator hacks, no streaming. Direct from KONAMI this time.
- Modern resolution support. 4K and ultrawide confirmed. Original was capped at 720p on PS3.
- Updated framerate cap. The PS3 version was 30fps locked. The PC version supports higher framerates.
- Achievements. First time MGS4 has Steam achievements.
- Metal Gear Online, reworked. The multiplayer mode that died on PS3 is back, with cross-region support and modern server infrastructure.
- Modern controllers. DualSense, Xbox, and most PC gamepads supported out of the box.
What didn't change: the cutscenes. They're still 8+ hours of long, codec-heavy, codec-radio chatter — the cinematic experience Hideo Kojima designed in 2008. No edits, no remastering, no AI-upscaling of the story. If you wanted MGS4's plot to be tightened up, this isn't that.
Price and editions
$29.99 standalone on Steam at launch. There's no launch discount — KONAMI rarely discounts Master Collection titles in the first 30 days, and MGS4 is no exception. If you want the whole Vol. 2 package (MGS2 HD, MGS3 HD, MGS4), the bundle is a separate purchase at a higher price point.

- You're a stealth-action fan who wants the original tactical-espionage playbook, pre-MGSV
- You want Metal Gear Online back, and PC cross-region play is a real bonus
Hold off if you bounced off MGS3's cutscene length — MGS4 is longer and chattier. Or if you mainly want modern stealth action; this is a 2008 game with 2008 pacing, not a 2026 action game.
