Is MGS4 on PC worth $29.99 in 2026?
You've waited 18 years for this port. The question isn't whether MGS4 is good — it's whether $29.99 with zero discount is the right price for a game from 2008. Short version: for most people who actually want it, yes, but check two things first.
What your $29.99 buys
- The full 2008 game, off the PS3 for the first time ever. That's the product. No remaster, no remake — the Master Collection Version is a port with modern conveniences bolted on.
- Steam features the original never had: achievements, trading cards, cloud saves, adjustable difficulty and full controller support (DualShock and DualSense both listed).
- Six languages — English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese, with full audio in English and Japanese only.
The catch to weigh: it's a day-one PC port of an 18-year-old PS3 game. KONAMI hasn't published performance details, there are no credible benchmarks yet, and the store page's spec list has quirks (more on that in the requirements breakdown). If you're sensitive to jank, it's worth waiting 48 hours to see what Steam early reviews say — day-one ports of classics have had rough starts before.
The $49.99 question: standalone vs Vol.2
Master Collection Vol.2 is $49.99 and includes MGS4 plus Peace Walker HD, a digital soundtrack and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel as a bonus. If you only care about Snake's last mission, the standalone at $29.99 saves you $20. If you've never played Peace Walker — arguably the best portable Metal Gear — the bundle is the smarter buy; that's roughly $10 per game.
Windows 11 is a hard requirement — check before buying
This is the one that'll catch people out. The official minimum spec lists Windows 11 64-bit only. Windows 10 doesn't appear anywhere on the store page. If your PC is still on Windows 10, this game is the moment to upgrade the OS or skip the purchase.

The honest verdict
Buy it now if: you're a Metal Gear fan who never owned a PS3, or you want Snake's ending on modern hardware with achievements to chase. Eighteen years of waiting is worth $29.99 — that's the whole point of this release.
Wait instead if: you're on Windows 10, you're not sure your PC can handle a day-one port, or you've got other things to play — KONAMI's Metal Gear titles do go on sale regularly, it's usually months rather than years.
