What is No More Room in Hell 2?
No More Room in Hell 2 is the sequel to the free Source-engine mod that defined hardcore zombie co-op for a generation of PC players. Torn Banner Studios — the Chivalry people — took the formula and made it bigger: eight players, huge maps, and the same brutal rulebook. Ammo is scarce, infection is permanent, and one mistake can end a run. It's not Left 4 Dead; it's slower, meaner, and much more about surviving than killing.
The game spent nearly two years in Early Access with a rocky start — the launch was rough and the player count reflected it. The 1.0 update, called Armageddon, is the big redemption swing: it shipped alongside the PlayStation and Xbox releases, and the early response has been noticeably warmer than the EA days. The r/nmrih community, which was loudly frustrated in 2024, is cautiously back on board.
How it plays
- 8-player co-op with objectives — get in, complete the mission, get out. No respawns, no hand-holding.
- Permanent infection. Get bitten and you're a liability; the game doesn't let you just heal it away.
- Scavenging economy. Ammo and supplies are deliberately scarce. You'll be meleeing more than you expect.
- Big, dense maps with objectives that force you to move through the worst of the horde.
- Crossplay between PC, PS5, and Xbox at 1.0 — the console crowd joins the PC pool.
The honest take: this is a game for people who found Left 4 Dead too forgiving. If you want power fantasy zombie shooting, this will frustrate you. If you want tense, dark, team-dependent survival where running away is a valid strategy, it's one of the best in the genre — and the 1.0 update finally delivers the maps and performance the Early Access years promised.
