Why consoles nearly shipped at 30fps — and the day-one 60fps patch
A week before launch, The Blood of Dawnwalker did not have a 60fps mode on any console. After a day of very loud pushback, it now does. Here's the timeline, who gets what, and why Series S is still stuck at 30.
What happened
Mid-August, Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco showed new console gameplay and confirmed the graphics modes: a 30fps Quality mode and a 40fps Balance mode on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X, plus a single 30fps mode on Series S. No 60fps option anywhere. RPG Site and Pure Xbox both reported it straight — "no 60fps mode on consoles."
That landed about as well as you'd expect in 2026. Threads on r/xbox, r/PS5 and r/gaming filled up fast; the main r/gaming thread passed 3,000 upvotes with over 500 comments in under a day. The complaint wasn't really about the 30fps Quality mode existing — it's that there was no alternative on a $70 AAA release.
The reversal
On August 24, a week before launch, the studio came back with "we heard your feedback": a day-one patch adds a Performance mode targeting 60fps on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X. Game Informer confirmed the details, and the announcement threads on r/PS5 and r/gaming were noticeably less angry afterwards.
One catch: Xbox Series S stays at 30fps. It gets a single mode, Quality. No performance option on the cheap box.
Who gets 60fps with the day-one patch
- PS5 — yes (Performance mode via day-one patch)
- PS5 Pro — yes (Performance mode via day-one patch)
- Xbox Series X — yes (Performance mode via day-one patch)
- Xbox Series S — no, single 30fps mode
- PC — uncapped, depends on your hardware
What this meant for launch day
Two things worth knowing. First, review code and early impressions published before September 2 ran on pre-patch builds — worth remembering when you compare that first wave of coverage with how the game runs now. Second, the reversal is a good sign for how Rebel Wolves handles feedback, but it's also a sign the original console plan was behind the standard. A day-one patch fixes the framerate, not the impression that it shouldn't have shipped that way.
