What is BRIGANDINE ABYSS?

Brigandine is the series about wars fought by leaders with bound monster squads. It quieted down after the 1998 original, came back with Legend of Runersia in 2020, and Abyss is the third entry. Developed by Adglobe, published by Happinet with NIS America handling the western release. By design it's a fresh entry point: you don't need the older games.

The setup: the great sorcerer Lunadea forged the magical Brigandine armor to stop the Abyssloa Empire, and 200 years later the empire is stirring again. You pick one of six nations — among them the kingdom of Solginat and queen Mysteine's realm — each with its own story campaign, and try to take the continent of Meltitea before the empire takes it.

How it plays: two games in one

The strategic layer runs on a continent map. Each season you get an Organization Phase to train troops, send squads on quests for equipment and building materials, and shuffle units between bases, then an Attack Phase where you invade neighboring nations. More bases you hold, more resources you get per turn, so early expansion matters more than anything.

When armies clash you drop into hex-based tactical battles: up to 3 leaders per side, each leading a squad of up to 5 monsters. Kill the leader and their whole squad routs, so target discipline is the core skill. A Zone of Control system slows movement next to enemy units so you can't just scythe around the flanks every turn. Units can die for real (though resurrection exists), which gives fights a bit of edge even when you're winning.

Beginner guide: how to start

• Pick Story Mode first. Six nations, six campaigns with their own story beats (Steam lists Gran Dragnica, Scarlet Will, Mysteine, Purifanoe, Samura Village and Pandemyuon as the playable six). Mission Mode later lets you play 24 nations, each with its own win condition.
• Expand early. Your income scales with bases controlled, and base upgrades unlock the items needed for a unit's final class change at level 20. Quests are how you get most of that material, so keep squads busy between battles.
• Learn the leader rule. A dead leader takes their whole squad with them. Fights often come down to who can kill the enemy commander first, so keep your own leaders guarded and punish overextended ones.
• Use the retreat trick. If a squad is about to be wiped, you can have the leader sacrifice themselves so the rest pulls back. Units can be revived and it's not expensive.
• Second runs are faster. Every reviewer says the same thing: once you know the systems, the next campaign flows much smoother. Don't judge the game by your first nation's mid-game.
