The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition
The 2011 co-op action RPG from Snowblind Studios is back, re-released by Aspyr after nearly seven years off the shelves. Out Aug 11, 2026 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch and Switch 2 — $19.99 now that the launch discount has ended.
What is it?
War in the North is the 2011 action RPG where you play out the war against Sauron away from the Fellowship's path — three characters fighting through the ruins of the North against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean who's rallied an army at Fornost. It was always the odd one out in the LOTR game catalog: a darker, bloodier take, and one of the few games in the franchise built around three-player co-op from the ground up.
It disappeared from storefronts years ago and has been hard to buy legally since. Aspyr picked it up, and on Aug 11, 2026 the Legacy Edition shadow-dropped on every modern platform at once. That's a big deal for people who grew up on it — the r/pcgaming thread announcing it pulled 685 upvotes and 250+ comments in a day, and the launch trailer is sitting on Aspyr's own channel.
The Steam owner controversy
There's a catch that's been annoying people all week: the Legacy Edition is a new store listing, and existing owners of the old version don't get it for free. On r/Steam the top thread calls it "a terrible precedent for existing Steam owners" — the original game had been delisted, and now it's back as a separate $19.99 product instead of an upgrade. Fair complaint or not, it's the thing people are actually arguing about right now, so it's worth knowing before you buy.
How it plays
- Three heroes, three styles: Eradan the Ranger, Andriel the Elf Loremaster, and Farin the Dwarf Champion. You switch between them on the fly, and each has their own skill tree.
- Co-op is the point: up to three players online, each taking one hero. The original's launch had notorious co-op problems; players are reporting the Legacy Edition actually fixes the connectivity (more on the co-op page).
- Loot and levels: it's a proper action RPG — gear drops, skill points, upgradeable weapons with set bonuses.
- Darker tone: not the kid-friendly Middle-earth. The Steam description leans into the grittier side of Tolkien's North.
Honest take: this is a fifteen-year-old game wearing new clothes, not a remake. The combat is dated, the enemy AI does old things, and if you never played it in 2011 it'll feel like a relic in places. What holds up is the co-op structure — almost nothing else lets three friends play through a full LOTR campaign together — and the voice acting, which reviewers keep singling out.
Steam price checked Sep 21, 2026: $19.99 full price. The launch discount (-10%, $17.99) has ended.
Worth a look if
- You played it in 2011 and want it back on a modern machine
- You want a full LOTR campaign you can play with two friends
- You're a Tolkien completionist and this is the one gap in your collection
Hold off if you're on a base PS5 — players are reporting real performance issues there right now (see the worth it page). And if you already own the 2011 version, check whether the Legacy Edition actually adds anything for you before spending.
