Is NBA 2K27 worth $69.99?
The 2K27 pre-order is the first one in a few years where the community is openly auditing the math. Here's the case for and against, and the thing most reviews won't tell you.
What 10,000 VC actually buys you
The pre-order bonus is 10,000 Virtual Currency. At 2K's default VC pricing — 35,000 VC for $9.99, 100,000 VC for $29.99, the bundles that show up in the in-game store — 10,000 VC is roughly $2.00 of in-store value. That covers:
- One small cosmetic pack
- A couple of attribute-boosting items in MyCAREER
- Almost nothing meaningful in MyTEAM, where 10,000 VC won't even buy one pack in most weeks
So the literal value of the pre-order bonus is small. Pre-ordering for the VC alone doesn't make sense. What it does is give you a small head start the day the game unlocks.
The pre-order discount that's gone
2K's pattern for the last few years has been: open pre-orders, offer a 10% discount for the first week or two, then close the discount window before the actual game reveal. The Reddit thread "NBA 2K is facing criticism after confirming NBA 2K27 News won't be revealed until August 18, one day after the pre-order discount ends" (r/NBA2k, Aug 11, 2026) is the loud version of what most returning players quietly noticed on 2K25 and 2K26 — the marketing budget is aimed at the wallet, not the informed decision.
For 2K27 specifically, the pre-order discount window has already expired by the time 2K started talking about the game. Whether that repeats depends on 2K's launch calendar; nothing's been confirmed.
What you're actually paying for
The real question is whether NBA 2K27 as a product is worth $69.99 on day one. The honest answer depends on what you play 2K for:
- MyCAREER players — the new story is the headline. If you liked 2K26's, you'll probably like this. If you've been bored with the last three, this won't fix it; the MyCAREER loop is essentially the same.
- MyTEAM players — content here shifts year to year. Most of the pre-order crowd plays MyTEAM long-term, and $70 for a year of card modes is roughly in line with what a card-game player spends on a single set release. If MyTEAM is your main mode, pre-ordering is fine.
- Online Park / Rec / City players — you're paying for the online sandbox and the next 12 months of seasonal content. The grind to a competitive build is real; pre-order VC speeds it up marginally.
- Offline / single-player only — you can skip the pre-order. Buy the game a week after launch during the first price drop, or wait for the first sale. The single-player modes (Play Now, MyNBA, The W) don't benefit from VC.
The pre-order discount — when 2K runs it, when it ends
2K's pattern across 2K25 and 2K26 was: a 10% pre-order discount (about $7 off $69.99) opens with the pre-order announcement and closes about 7-10 days later. For 2K27, the pre-order window opened earlier than usual and the discount closed before the Aug 18 reveal — by design, the community argues. If 2K follows the same pattern for the launch-window discount, expect something in early September, likely a few days before Sep 3.
The "rip off" thread, summarized
r/NBA2k's "NBA 2k27 rip off" thread (Jul 22, 2026) and the "Please don't pre-order 27 before gameplay drops" thread (Jul 7, 2026) make the same argument: 2K's pre-order rewards have shrunk every year while the price has stayed at $69.99, and the gameplay reveal window is too narrow for an informed decision. Both are reasonable. The thing they're not saying: NBA 2K is still the only licensed basketball sim on PC, so the lack of competition is what lets 2K hold the price.
Verdict
Pre-order if you're deep in MyTEAM or play with a regular crew that needs everyone day one. The 10,000 VC doesn't change the math, but the head start on the online grind does matter for that audience.
Skip if you're a single-player or returning player. Wait for the first patch notes (the launch-day multiplayer tuning is usually a mess), or for the launch-week discount if 2K runs one.
Either way, don't pre-order based on the 10,000 VC bonus alone. It's a small starter pack, not a value proposition.
