Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Capcom finally returns to Onimusha after two decades. A Musashi-inspired samurai takes the Oni Gauntlet into Edo-era Kyoto to cut down the Genma, with the kind of parry-heavy, blood-soaked swordfighting the PS2 originals were loved for. Out now — Capcom's own worldwide date is September 4, 2026 — on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2.
What is Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Onimusha hasn't had a new mainline entry since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006. Way of the Sword is Capcom's first real return — and it's been positioned as a fresh start, not a revival. The protagonist is a new character inspired by Miyamoto Musashi, not Samanosuke Akechi from the PS2 originals. The setting is Kyoto in the late Edo period, twisted by "clouds of Malice" that bring the Genma back.
What stays the same is the core fantasy: a lone swordsman with a supernatural gauntlet cutting through demons in close, brutal duels. The Oni Gauntlet absorbs the souls of defeated Genma and lets you power up your weapons and abilities over the course of the game.
How it plays
- Parry-driven combat. The Issen parry — a precise counter timed for the instant an enemy swings — is the centerpiece. Get it right and you can cut straight through an enemy's guard and follow up with a heavy combo.
- Single katana, deep progression. You carry one main blade that you upgrade by absorbing Genma souls. Different souls give different elemental effects — fire, ice, lightning — so the weapon's behavior changes as you progress.
- Linear chapters, not open zones. Marketing so far describes a stage-based structure: each chapter is a self-contained slice of Kyoto with its own bosses. Don't go in expecting a soulslike map.
- Single-player only. No co-op, no multiplayer mode.
Release date and price
Capcom's official date is September 4, 2026 — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, all on the same day, no staggered rollout. Steam prints "Sep 3" because the PC version unlocks at one single global moment, which lands on the evening of the 3rd in the Americas. Every storefront lists $69.99, and nothing has been discounted since launch (checked September 23, 2026).
Steam (US) price on Sep 23, 2026 — full price then, full price now. See the full breakdown on our release date page.
How it landed
Three weeks in, the Steam reception is solid: 23,592 reviews, 90% of them positive (checked September 23, 2026). For a $70 chapter-based action game, that's the number that decides it.
The complaint you'll actually run into is performance, not combat. Players on r/Onimusha and r/OptimizedGaming keep hitting stutter and hitching once frame rate climbs above 60 — the fixes that spread fastest were capping the frame rate and trimming CPU-side settings. The Steam page also lists 52 achievements and 14 supported languages if you want the fine print.
Worth a look if
- You played the PS2 Onimusha games and want to see what a modern Capcom team does with the formula
- You like parry-first action — Sekiro-adjacent combat without the soulslike structure
- You're burned out on open-world games and want a focused, chapter-based campaign
Hold off if you only buy soulslikes or wanted a Samanosuke sequel — the protagonist is new, the structure is chapter-based, and there's been no discount since launch.
