What is Ragnarok: The New World?

It's the official take on Ragnarok Online from Gravity itself — the company that owns the IP. The New World is a cross-platform MMORPG: the same game world runs on PC and mobile, with the cute, chunky Midgard look RO fans remember, redone with high-quality visuals and audio. It's also the first open-world RO, which is how the official launch trailer sells it.

This isn't a private server or a fan remake. It's the licensed product, positioning itself as the modern home for the classic RO experience — eight classes at launch including a brand-new one called the Druid, with more of the old Midgard charm on top.

How it plays

Ragnarok: The New World gameplay: party combat in an open field with skill effects, HP bars and the classic RO UI

The honest take: if you played Ragnarok Online in its heyday, this is the closest thing to an official modern successor — same world, same vibe, cross-platform so you can keep your character on the phone. It's early days for the launch build, though, and the reception so far has been mixed (more on that below).

Free to Play $0

No purchase price on Steam. It's a free-to-play MMO, so in-app purchases are part of the model — the current cash shop contents are on the Steam store page.

Worth a look if

  • You're an RO veteran who wants the official, licensed modern version
  • You split your gaming between PC and phone and want one character pool
  • You want a free MMO to poke at without committing money

Skip it for now if you want a polished, content-complete MMO — the launch state is still rough, and the Steam reviews reflect that.

The launch reception (real numbers)

As of Aug 15, 2026, Steam shows 162 positive out of 482 reviews — about 34%, which Steam rates as "Mostly Negative". That sounds worse than it feels for a free game, but it's worth knowing before you dive in. On Reddit, r/RagnarokOnline has been busy since launch with threads like "How is Ragnarok: The New World? Is it worth playing?" and SEA players posting their first impressions — the classic-RO feel is there for many, but plenty of players are pointing at launch-day rough edges.

Because it costs nothing, the risk is your time, not your wallet. RO fans should go in with tempered expectations; everyone else can wait for a few patches and re-check.
