The first big expansion for Heart of Chornobyl, out since August 20, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X|S and — for the first time — PS5. A new nonlinear story chapter in the Zone, plus the free Update 2.0 that landed the same day. Here's what it is, what it costs, and whether it's worth your $30.
What is Cost of Hope?
The first major expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, made by GSC Game World themselves. It's a new expedition into the Zone with a nonlinear story that branches hard: at one point you pick between the Duty and Freedom factions, and that choice leads to different endings. Players who finished both routes report close to 20 hours to see everything.
The expansion adds two new regions — the Iron Forest and the area around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) — plus new weapons, armor, artifacts and missions. It shipped alongside Update 2.0 ("Back to the Zone"), a free patch that reworked parts of the base game for everyone, DLC or not.
How it plays
- A real story chapter, not a side quest pack. The main questline runs 10–12 hours on its own; full exploration pushes it to 16–20.
- Faction branching. Duty or Freedom — the route you take changes missions and which ending you get.
- New territory. Iron Forest and CNPP are proper zones, with their own anomalies, stashes, safe codes and side content.
- You don't have to replay the base game. Advanced Starts drop you into the DLC with a geared character instead of starting from the prologue.
Price — no launch discount
Steam price as of Aug 23, 2026. No discount at launch week. Requires the base game, Heart of Chornobyl — if you don't own that yet, watch for bundle pricing instead of buying both at full price.
How to get started
On a new save, the DLC kicks in once you leave the Lesser Zone (during the second main mission): go to the Slag Heap, listen to the radio broadcast, and the Terra Incognita mission lands in your journal. Think twice if you bounced off the base game's combat or bugs — the expansion doesn't reinvent any of that. And Update 2.0 alone isn't a reason to buy anything; it's free regardless.
