How Long Is Cost of Hope?
Short answer: 10–12 hours for the main story, 16–20 if you're the type who clears every stash. Longer if you start from scratch instead of using an Advanced Start. Numbers below are from players who finished both routes.
The numbers
- Main story only: about 10–12 hours on Stalker difficulty. Easier difficulties run shorter.
- Full exploration: add roughly 6–8 hours for side missions, hidden loot and fully sweeping Iron Forest and CNPP.
- Completionist total: 16–20 hours.
- Both endings: finishing the Duty route and then replaying the Freedom route (or vice versa) pushes reviewers' runs close to 20 hours.
One catch those estimates leave out: the second half of the DLC only unlocks after the base game's 20th main mission, A Minor Incident. If you're starting fresh, add whatever the campaign takes to get there — the DLC clock above assumes you're already past that point or jumping in via Advanced Start.
$30 for that length — fair deal?
At $29.99 you're paying roughly $1.50–3 per hour, which is solid for a story expansion of this size. Compare: the free Stories Untold update earlier in the year gave everyone 6–8 hours at zero cost, so GSC has set a generous baseline. Cost of Hope is the first paid content and it's priced like a mid-size indie game, not a 4-hour cash grab.
If your bar is "main story justifies the price alone," 10–12 hours clears it. If you rush and skip all sides, it'll feel shorter — the exploration is where the new regions earn their keep.
Speedrun route, if you just want the story
- Use an Advanced Start from the main menu instead of replaying the campaign — saves the most time by far.
- Ignore the safe-code and artifact hunting until a second playthrough; none of it gates the endings.
- Pick one faction route first (Duty is the more common first pick), then decide if the other ending is worth a replay to you.
