How to Start the Cost of Hope DLC
You bought Cost of Hope, launched STALKER 2, and... nothing happened. That's normal — the DLC doesn't start itself. Here's exactly where it kicks in, whether you're on a fresh save or a 100-hour old one.
New playthrough: it unlocks early, but not immediately
The first part of Cost of Hope becomes available once you leave the Lesser Zone — that's during the second main mission, Behind Seven Seals. Head to the Slag Heap and listen to the radio broadcast there. That broadcast is tied to a new DLC NPC, and once you've heard it, the first expansion mission, Terra Incognita, lands in your journal automatically.
So: roughly 30–60 minutes into a new save. If you're standing in the Slag Heap and nothing's triggering, make sure you actually own the DLC on the right account/platform and restart the game once.
The second half is gated behind the main story
This trips people up. The DLC questline pauses after its opening act and only resumes after you complete A Minor Incident — the 20th main story mission of the base game. Then you talk to Prof. Ozersky and take a call from Mavka to kick off Moving in the Shadows, which opens up the CNPP endgame content.
If Mavka and Zulu aren't showing up in the Sultansk when they should: use the Guide to fast travel away, rest, then fast travel back. That nudges them into spawning — a known quirk.
Old save? You have two options
- Continue your save. If you've already finished A Minor Incident, the DLC content is available right away — load up and check your journal for Terra Incognita or head toward the new zones.
- Skip straight in. The main menu has an option to jump directly into DLC content with an Advanced Start — a pre-made geared character. Pick Ward or Spark depending on which faction flavor you want; it changes some framing but not the core story.
Common problems
- Terra Incognita never appears. You haven't left the Lesser Zone yet, or you're listening for the radio before reaching the Slag Heap specifically.
- DLC installed but no content. Restart the game after install — Update 2.0 and the expansion both need a clean relaunch to register.
- Playing on Game Pass? The base game is on the catalog, but the expansion may need a separate purchase even with an active sub.
