WARDOGS
A 100-player, three-team tactical FPS from BULKHEAD (the studio behind Battalion 1944) and Team17. Drops into Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026 at $39.99 (Standard) or $49.99 (Supporter). Three factions fight over one randomized Control Zone on a destructible 256 km² map. No fixed classes — you buy your role every life with persistent cash.
5 things that will decide if you live past minute five
Most of the questions "is WARDOGS worth $39.99" miss the more practical one: will your first match make sense? The closed alpha had a 16k concurrent peak, but a 100-player server is brutal if you walk in blind. These five details are the ones alpha veterans keep repeating on Reddit and in the BULKHEAD Discord:
- Your first $10,000 is everything. You start with $10,000 in persistent cash and spend it before every life — weapons, equipment, vehicles. A helicopter costs a chunk of that. A pistol costs almost nothing. Buying the wrong loadout twice in a row and you're broke by the third life.
- There are no classes. "Medic" and "Pilot" are XP progression tracks, not starting roles. You build your role by buying specialist items with cash, which means your squad's composition shifts depending on what everyone can afford that match.
- The map is 256 km² but the fight is over 2×2 km. BULKHEAD built a 16×16 km playable area around a single randomized 2×2 km Control Zone. Most of your match is the run — vehicles, helicopters, and forward operating bases you build with your team exist to compress that distance.
- Destruction is capped on purpose. You can blow holes through buildings with rocket launchers and tanks, but BULKHEAD tested unrestricted destruction and it flattened maps in under an hour. Don't expect total sandbox destruction like Teardown — expect combat-relevant holes.
- First team to 100 points wins. Not kills. Points from Control Zone time, revives, logistics, spotting, and objective play. A player who revives four teammates and pilots one helicopter is worth more to their team than a player with 12 kills and a $0 balance.
The three factions, and why "what's the best one" is the wrong question
WARDOGS ships with three factions — Valkyra, Lonestar, and Manticore. Faction is closer to a colour on your uniform than to a Battlefield-style archetype: the gameplay loop is the same for all three, and your role in any given match comes from what you spend, not which side you queued for.
| Faction | What BULKHEAD has shown | What changes for you |
|---|---|---|
| Valkyra | Featured most in early marketing screenshots and dev streams | Nothing mechanically — faction is visual and spawn-base side |
| Lonestar | Western-coded faction in the public press kit | Same loadout economy as Valkyra and Manticore |
| Manticore | Featured in the Beta Recap video as a third combatant | Same — no class or perk tied to faction at EA launch |
If you're the kind of player who picks the side with the coolest aesthetic and never thinks about it again, WARDOGS lets you do that. If you're looking for "the medic faction" or "the tank faction," that's not where faction is yet. That may change as the six XP tracks (Medic through Pilot) mature over the 1–2 year EA window BULKHEAD has publicly discussed.
The $10 question: is Supporter Edition actually worth the extra $10?
WARDOGS has two editions on Steam at launch: Standard at $39.99 and Supporter at $49.99. The store page doesn't spell out everything that ships with Supporter, which is fair — the game is in Early Access and the perk list will move. What is publicly stated:
Base game on Steam as of September 7, 2026. No launch discount listed. Pre-purchase is open now; Early Access unlocks September 10, 2026.
Pre-ordering the Supporter Edition historically in Early Access games of this scale tends to bundle cosmetic packs, an in-game currency boost (relevant here — starting cash), and a name in the credits. None of that has been confirmed for WARDOGS specifically. BULKHEAD's beta communications described a "Black Market & Vault" and a "Player Skills & Challenge System" as developing metagame features, but a price-to-content breakdown for Supporter isn't published. If you only care about playing on day one, Standard is the safer bet. If you want the studio to keep making Battlefield-shaped games and want your wallet to say so, Supporter is the gesture.
What the closed alpha actually proved
The signal here matters more than usual. Most Early Access shooters launch on hype and a couple of trailers. WARDOGS got a real stress test before EA:
On Reddit's r/WarDogs, players compared the alpha to Battlefield at its peak, with the caveat that it's slower and more tactical. PC Gamer ran a piece titled "Believe the hype for Wardogs, possibly the next great multiplayer FPS." German outlet Mein-MMO framed it as "reminiscent of the good old days of Battlefield." One Reddit user (u/lonelystoner710420) played 20.7 hours across the alpha's three days; another (u/Traditional_Guest676) replied with 66.2 hours. Players posting on X showed double-digit hours too. Those are not idle-curiosity numbers — they are people who chose this over everything else on their Steam library.
The honest caveat: 16k concurrent in a closed alpha is not the same as 16k concurrent at EA launch. Closed-alpha players self-selected for hype. The real test is whether the game holds 16k concurrent during EA month one when the early-access jank shows up. BULKHEAD knows this — they've shipped one Battlefield-shaped game before (Battalion 1944) and watched it lose 90% of its launch playerbase in three months.
PC system requirements (what we know)
The full minimum and recommended specs haven't been posted to the public Steam store page as of September 7, 2026 — BULKHEAD has said they're releasing them closer to the EA date. What is confirmed:
- OS: Windows (Steam listing). No Mac, no Linux.
- Engine: Unreal Engine 5, with BULKHEAD's custom "WAR DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK" layered on top for 100-player all-out warfare.
- Anti-cheat: Easy Anti-Cheat (confirmed in the closed beta).
- Networking: Server tick rate, netcode details, and backend specifics are not yet public. Expect to see those before September 10.
If you're on a 5+ year-old GPU and 16 GB of RAM, that's likely fine for Medium. If you're targeting 100-player servers at 144 fps on an RTX 3060, wait for the published recommended spec — UE5 with 100-player netcode is not a free ride.
Buy it day one if
- You played 20+ hours of the closed alpha or closed beta and want more
- You missed the Battlefield 2142 / Battlefield 2 era of three-flag-large-map PvP and want something in that shape
- $39.99 for an Early Access multiplayer shooter is in budget — and you're fine waiting 1–2 years for it to fully mature
- You're on Windows with a modern mid-range or better GPU
Wait if you burned out on Battlefield 2042's launch, you only buy games that are out of Early Access, or you wanted a campaign — WARDOGS is PvP only, no single-player mode is planned at launch.
