What is Shift At Midnight?
You're on the night shift at a corner store. Your job: stock shelves, check IDs, take out the trash, mop up whatever's on the floor. Trouble is, some of the customers coming in are only pretending to be human, and your shift is randomly generated — so the layout changes and so do the tells. Make one mistake and you're boarding up the doors, setting bear traps, and hiding until the sun comes up.
The game started as a free browser horror by solo dev Bun Muen — the "would you survive the night shift" concept that did numbers online — and Kwalee brought the expanded, co-op version to Steam and Xbox. It launched July 22, 2026 after a short delay from June (the devs wanted more polish), day one on Game Pass, and it's been quietly picking up steam with players ever since — the "shift at midnight" searches have been climbing all week.
How it plays
- Up to 3 players in online co-op, or solo if your friends value their sleep.
- Randomly generated shifts: store layout, customer behavior, and the "pretenders" change every run, so it stays tense.
- Investigating beats fighting: you watch, test, and interrogate customers instead of gunning them down. When it goes wrong, it goes wrong fast.
- Horror-comedy tone: the trailer leans into how absurd the whole setup is — creepy, but with its tongue in its cheek.

The honest take: nine bucks for a tightly-scoped co-op horror is a fair trade, and if you have Game Pass it costs you nothing to try. It's not a long game — think an evening per run, short bursts after that — and the Steam version's player pool is separate from Game Pass players, which is worth knowing before you plan a session. But as a "weird thing to play with two friends at 1am" it hits exactly right.
